THE ONLY TOPIC of conversation in town was the upcoming meteor shower. It was all anyone talked about at Teddy’s salon, and now it was the only thing people were talking about at the diner. Well, that and Kasandra’s Meteor Shower Viewing party. If you asked Teddy, it was a lot of fuss for a bunch of lights in the sky, but who was he to begrudge people of their fun? Plus, another party at Kasandra’s would be a blast.

Teddy fiddled with his drink as he peered around the diner. It seemed busier than normal, but then again, it was almost the dinner rush, so more folks were coming in for their supper. It was odd for him to be there at a peak time. Teddy did his best to avoid the rush. The crowds didn’t help his anxiety and, it made it better to chat and enjoy his meal, especially when it was just him and Nicky.

“I’ve got the caterers all set, the band of course, and I’ve rented, from Kansas City, several telescopes so everyone should be able to scope out the sky if they want.” Kasandra reviewed her list, her black-framed glasses resting on the tip of her nose.

“Sounds good.” Teddy played with the straw of his diet pop.

“Do you think I should have a Mashed Potato Bar or a Risotto Bar?” Kasandra tapped the pencil to her chin. “I kind of want to have a grilled Reuben station too, but I’m worried if that will be too much. What do you think? I mean, I know food and booze make the party, but I want everyone to see the show that Mother Nature is providing.”

Teddy continued glancing out the window at the busy street.

“I know.” Kasandra pointed to her pad. “I’m going to have all the serving staff covered in body paint, and then we can lick the food right off them.”

“What?” Teddy’s head snapped back at her.

Kasandra put down her notepad. “Okay, what’s going on? You haven’t listened to a single thing I’ve been saying. Are you still worried about Nick?”

Teddy met her gaze. “He went from the sweet little boy to this stubborn, pigheaded, troublemaker of a teen. I don’t know what to do. Most of the time, he’s off with those loser friends of his, and I know they are causing trouble at Erica’s lab and greenhouse. But he won’t talk to me.” He took a sip of his drink. “You know Greg has caught them out there at least four times this last month, even after I grounded him. He’s been sneaking out.”

Kasandra laughed as she reached out for Teddy’s arm. “Being a parent isn’t easy. You should know that. You raised that boy for all those years.”

A smirk crossed Teddy’s lips as he shook his head, “But back then, if he got out of line, I could sic Lane on him. Now, it’s only me. I don’t like being the bad guy.”

“Maybe you need to try some tough love,” Kasandra said. “Have the sheriff lock him and his friends up overnight.
